KIGALI, RWANDA – The United African Institute of Technology (UAIT) witnessed a remarkable display of creativity and craftsmanship as students from the Jewelry Design program presented their handcrafted collections to peers, faculty, and guests during a special Portfolio Presentation Day held at the UAIT campus in Kimihurura.

The event showcased the exceptional talent and dedication of our emerging jewelry designers, who demonstrated not only their technical skills but also their ability to articulate the creative vision and design philosophy behind each piece. Each student presented a carefully curated collection of original jewelry, ranging from elegant necklaces and statement earrings to intricately designed bracelets and rings.

Celebrating Emerging Talent

The presentation room was transformed into an inspiring exhibition space, with students displaying their work on professional presentation boards while explaining their design concepts, material choices, and the techniques employed in creating each piece. The atmosphere was electric with enthusiasm as students took turns presenting their portfolios.

Among the presenters were talented students including Amani N-Sitayo, Uwimbabazi Brigitte, Belyse Mugisenge, and Impano Parfait, each bringing their unique artistic perspective to the showcase. Their collections reflected a beautiful blend of contemporary design sensibilities with influences from Rwandan and African cultural heritage.

Hands-On Learning in Action

The presentations demonstrated the practical, hands-on approach that defines UAIT's Jewelry Design program. Students showcased various techniques they have mastered throughout the program, including:

  • Wire wrapping and metal forming techniques
  • Chain making and link assembly
  • Pendant and charm creation
  • Material selection and combination
  • Professional presentation and display methods

One of the most engaging aspects of the event was watching students help each other try on the jewelry pieces, demonstrating the wearability and aesthetic appeal of their creations. This collaborative spirit exemplifies the supportive learning community that UAIT fosters among its students.

Faculty Guidance and Mentorship

The program's faculty provided invaluable guidance throughout the students' creative journey. Their expertise in jewelry design, combined with a passion for nurturing emerging talent, has been instrumental in helping students develop both their technical skills and artistic vision.

The presentation day also served as an opportunity for students to receive constructive feedback from faculty members and peers, helping them refine their work and prepare for future professional endeavors in the jewelry industry.
